Mobile Media Applications Development Hands-on Training Program

According to IDC data, smartphone sales in the US increased by 68% in 2008, far outpacing other mobile devices. Growth is expected to continue to be strong as consumers look at smartphones as cheap computers and not expensive phones. As Mobile internet has increased, mobile video consumption has been one of the driving forces behind data consumption. With Apple, Google, Microsoft, Nokia, and RIM, all launching or having launched a store similar to the "App Store," distributing and making money with mobile applications is gradually becoming more streamlined for the application developer. There is therefore a rapid explosion in both consumer and business application development on the mobile phone.

On May 14, 2009, UCLA-WINMEC Mobile Entertainment Media Forum is organizing its first Mobile Media Applications Development Hands-on Training Program. This training program is being held one day after the annual WINMEC Mobile Convergence Forum entitled Mobile Experience on May 13, 2009 (http://winmec.ucla.edu/entertainmentmedia). This program is being offered in response to the significant request from industry on a growth opportunity - that of developing consumer and business applications on mobile devices. Software, technology, business opportunities, and challenges will be presented. Demonstrations of technology will be given, where relevant.

Professors, researchers, and graduate students from UCLA and practitioners from industry will collectively host this one-day seminar. Lecture notes will be made available to the participants. The focus will be on training attendees with the intent of helping them develop applications. Due to limitation of space as a consequence of the intended close interaction between the instructors and the participants, there will be a limit on the number of attendees. Therefore we would require you to first submit your application, and subsequently, we will get back to you. The target audience for this program are CIOs, I.T. Directors, Managers and Software developers. Industries who should participate include B-to-C sector include telecommunications, entertainment media, and, gaming software, and in B-to-B include aerospace, manufacturing, healthcare, shipping, logistics, retail, transportation, government, etc.

  • The advent of new generation of platforms such as Android and iPhone and what this means to the industry
  • New business models that have arisen and what that means to software development cost, distribution cost, selling cost, maintenance cost, etc.
